Shop till you drop in Castlemaine

Shopping fever is about to hit Castlemaine again with dozens of bargain hunters checking out 12 shops in three hours during the 2012 Castlemaine Shopping Tour on Friday, November 16.
The popular event has been running for 13 years and all funds go to the Castlemaine Childcare Co-operative, which runs a long day care centre (Castlemaine Childcare Centre) and provides family day care throughout the region.
"As a not-for-profit centre, owned and managed by the community, fundraising is an essential part of our ongoing operation," said Bek Kenneally. "Any financial profits are spent on the centre and on improving the quality of care."
Bek said the money raised at the shopping tour would be used to purchase toys and other resources for the centre.
"It is always exciting to have new items to build up the range of experiences for the children."
While the fundraising aspect is important, The Shopping Tour is also about supporting local businesses and encouraging people to Shop Local!, Bek says.
"We are fortunate in Castlemaine to have fabulous local businesses and it is important that as a community we spend money in town and keep them running.
"We are very pleased to have the support of 12 local businesses this year, many of whom have been part of the shopping tour for many years - some since the very beginning, and they will all offer exclusive discounts and special offers on the night. "
She describes the tour as fun and relaxed event.
"It's stress-free, hassle-free and child-free and we have exclusive access to the shops (the tour runs from 5.30pm until 9pm when the shops are closed to the public).
The shoppers meet at The Comma at 5.30pm on the day and they are split into groups of about 12. The groups then move through the shops one group at a time spending 15 minutes in each shop.
This year the shops include Dalrene on Mostyn, Jumping Jupiters Toy Store, Shoe Connection, Stocks Gifts and Gallery and many more.
At the end of the night, the shoppers meet back at The Comma for food and drinks and to draw the raffles.
Tickets are still available from the Castlemaine Childcare Centre, Extremity and Much Loved for $20. For further details call 5472 3665.
